Chapter Eleven

“You can’t,” I blurted out.

“Can’t what? Visit my friend in Witch’s Cove?” Bethany asked.

“Yes, or rather, no. You can visit, but you shouldn’t, at least not before Raymond is no longer a threat.” I wanted to prevent her and Gertrude from having to murder Raymond. I wanted him captured, dead, or powerless before that.

Her chuckle came out rueful. “I thought we’d established he can’t be stopped—at least when I am by myself. You and I could join forces, but are you certain you are as powerful as Gertrude?”

Hardly. “No, I’m not.” I looked up at Dominic. “Show her the stone. Maybe we can use this gem to send Raymond back to his hometown in another time—like to a year after his mother has already been murdered. And then we could leave him there. I thought it might be better if we did the sending, though. You don’t need any more guilt.”

“You wouldn’t feel bad?”

“It isn’t like we’d be killing him.”

She held out her hand. “Let me see that gem.”

Dominic handed the stone to her. Since I didn’t have my pink pendant, nothing should happen to us.

Bethany studied it. “It looks ordinary, but I can feel something pulsing inside it. It’s possible someone powerful put a spell on it.” She shook her head. “I don’t think this could help send him back. It might need your companion necklace, Glinda.”

“Fine, then just use your gold coin.”

“I could do that.”

She was hesitating. Why? What was I missing? “Considering Dominic didn’t age when he came forward in time, I’m assuming that if you sent Raymond back in time—or someone did—that he would be a forty something year-old man and not a kid, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Which means that as a man, he’d have the ability to kill his dad.”

“Unfortunately.”

Darn. There had to be another option. I just needed to think of it. “Can we send him somewhere beside his hometown? Maybe to another country but not provide him with any money so he’d have a hard time getting back. It could even be in this time period.”

She leaned forward. “I guess it’s possible, but time travel is complicated. It doesn’t always work as planned. Sending you from Witch’s Cove to here was rather easy. There seems to be a portal in your town. I suspect it’s because of the many witches present. Here’s the thing, though. Once a person breaches the fabric of time, it weakens it. With each passage, the next one is easier.”

Great. Just our luck the portal was in our office or so it seemed. “Does that mean if we time traveled back and forth a few times from Witch’s Cove to here that someone might accidentally come through—for lack of a better word?”

“I don’t have enough experience to say, but it seems like it could happen.”

That was a really scary thought. I looked over at Jaxson. “I have a really, really, crazy idea.”

He laughed. “Pink lady, most of your ideas are crazy, but for some unknown reason, they work. Tell me.”

“I have had a few thoughts, but most have tiny issues associated with them.
